Dans le début des années 80, Archie Shepp s’est éloigné de sa période antérieure de free jazz afrocentrique pour explorer le hard bop en collaboration avec des musiciens plus conventionnels, travaillant notamment avec les labels Denon et SteepleChase. Son partenariat avec SteepleChase a débuté en 1977 avec un album en duo aux côtés du pianiste Horace Parlan. En 1980, ils sont retournés en studio pour une nouvelle collaboration. Au cours de la même session, Shepp, accompagné du talentueux contrebassiste européen Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, a enregistré un album en hommage à Charlie Parker. Malgré leurs différences stylistiques apparentes, le saxophone libre de Shepp se marie bien avec la basse ancrante de Pedersen, résultant en une collaboration étonnamment efficace. L’approche de Shepp est lyrique et nuancée, apportant une sonorité hard bop moderne à des compositions bien connues sans pour autant les imiter.

In the early 80s, Archie Shepp departed from his earlier Afrocentric free jazz persona and explored hard bop in collaborations with mainstream musicians for labels like Denon and SteepleChase. His partnership with SteepleChase began in 1977 with a duet album featuring pianist Horace Parlan. In 1980, they returned for another collaborative effort. During the same studio session, Shepp, accompanied by accomplished European bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, recorded a Charlie Parker tribute. Despite their apparent stylistic differences, Shepp’s freer saxophone complements Pedersen’s anchoring bass, resulting in a surprisingly effective collaboration. Shepp’s approach is lyrical and nuanced, bringing a modern hard bop sound to well-known compositions without imitating the originals.
