Libertango, a composition by Argentine bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla, was published in Italy in 1974 during his expatriation in search of opportunities: “I’m leaving because in Buenos Aires, I’m one of the many unemployed filling the streets.” Success eventually came! Libertango marks a revolutionary turn in Piazzolla’s work and the history of tango, introducing electric elements. Piazzolla complicates traditional tango rhythms, employs counterpoint, incorporates classical repertoire, and adds new instruments like the electric guitar, giving rise to the “tango nuevo,” a new dance genre derived from traditional Argentine tango. The title Libertango naturally emerges from the fusion of the words “libertad” and “tango.”
