In 1979, Wooly Wolstenholme, a founding member of Barclay James Harvest, left the band due to his dissatisfaction with the musical direction they were taking. He handed control to Les Holroyd and John Lees, releasing a solo album (which later led to the formation of a group, Maestoso), and later collaborated with John Lees again. Interestingly, his departure marked a shift in BJH’s musical orientation, particularly in the increased prominence of keyboards in their sound, as showcased in the 1980 album “Eyes Of The Universe.” This album, noted by the band for its less complex and more commercial approach, introduces dynamic keyboard usage and upbeat compositions, accentuated by electronic percussion and exceptional production. With a unique blend of sounds and successful harmonies, it strikes a balance between Supertramp and the Alan Parsons Project, offering impeccable and contemporary pop. BJH would maintain a similar recipe for their next album, “Turn Of The Tide,” with equal success.
