French pressing. Survival, Bob Marley’s politically charged album, was released in October 1979. It was produced by Marley and Alex Sadkin instead of Chris Blackwell, and featured songs that were inspired by Marley’s visit to Ethiopia and the dire situation in Jamaica at the time. One of the album’s notable songs, “Zimbabwe,” referred to the country before it achieved independence and was written while Marley stayed in Shashamani, a Rastafarian settlement in Ethiopia. The song was so popular among Zimbabweans that Marley was the only outsider invited to perform at the country’s celebrations after independence, which he considered the greatest honor of his life.
