Brainbox came together in 1968 when guitarist Jan Akkerman and drummer Pierre van der Linden joined forces with 19-year-old singer Kazmierz “Kaz” Lux, who had recently won a talent contest sponsored by the Dutch record label Bovema. Lux, of Polish descent but Dutch upbringing, brought a soulful vocal style influenced by Howlin’ Wolf and Leadbelly, with the ability to hit Ella Fitzgerald’s higher registers. Akkerman, already a well-known musician in the Amsterdam music scene, had a distinctive rock guitar sound influenced by jazz and classical music, while van der Linden had previous experience with Akkerman in various bands. Bassist Andre Reynen completed the lineup, and Brainbox was born after Akkerman initially played bass on their demo recordings.
