It’s a shame that the Clark Terry big band has always been a part-time endeavor because the flugelhornist truly shines when leading a jazz orchestra. This Vanguard LP captures a live performance of the swinging outfit in 1976, with Ernie Wilkins’s arrangements providing the band with its distinct personality. The album offers some excellent solo moments for musicians like Wilkins on tenor, altoist Chris Woods, and pianist Ronnie Mathews, but Clark Terry remains the main star. The inclusion of lesser-known material, including four Wilkins originals and Jimmy Heath’s “Gap Sealer,” adds to the album’s appeal. However, it’s currently out of print, making it a challenge to find until a much-deserved CD reissue eventually becomes available.
