“Live in Montreux” captures Elis Regina’s performance at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival, where she was accompanied by a band led by her husband, the renowned Brazilian pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano. The album also features guest performer Hermeto Pascoal on piano and vocals. The first track, Joao Bosco’s “Cobra Criada,” is a funky samba that showcases Camargo’s piano skills for the first five minutes before Regina’s vocals kick in. The song’s dynamic range is impressive, ranging from barely audible whispers to the thunderous rhythms of a Carnival samba school parade. The energy level rises even further as Regina and her band seamlessly transition into an exhilarating performance of Baden Powell’s “Cai Dentro.””
