Après les sorties de Brown Sugar de D’Angelo en 1995 et d’Urban Hang Suite de Maxwell en 1996, le grand public découvre et acclame une artiste dont la voix et l’attitude évoquent non seulement Nina Simone, mais surtout Billie Holiday : Erykah Badu. Enregistré entre New York, Philadelphie et Dallas, son album Baduizm remporte un immense succès critique et populaire. Porté par les singles On & On, Next Lifetime, Otherside of the Game et Apple Tree, il se vend à 3 millions d’exemplaires, remportant au passage le Grammy Award du meilleur album R&B, surpassant notamment Whitney Houston.
