Esquivel is widely regarded as the leading figure of the eccentric instrumental pop genre known today as Lounge music, popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His music is characterized by a highly unique style, featuring elements that are reminiscent of his contemporaries but also set apart by exotic percussion, wordless vocals, virtuosic piano runs, and dramatic dynamic changes. Esquivel’s compositions also include numerous jazz-like features, but unlike traditional jazz, his works are meticulously arranged with little to no improvisation, showcasing his perfectionism as a composer, performer, and recording artist.
