Au début de 1983, Huey Lewis and the News n’étaient qu’un groupe californien parmi tant d’autres, avec Huey lui-même ayant déjà goûté à la célébrité avec Clover dans les années 70 et ayant même contribué à l’harmonica sur “Live and Dangerous” de Thin Lizzy. Pourtant, ils n’étaient pas un groupe ordinaire. Lewis, une figure charismatique au profil immaculé, avait obtenu un score parfait de 800 aux épreuves de mathématiques du SAT, mais avait choisi la route avec ses amis musiciens plutôt que d’intégrer le MIT. Leur album révolutionnaire, chargé de tubes comme “The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll” et l’emblématique “I Want a New Drug”, les a propulsés au statut de stars internationales. L’album a mis en valeur leur polyvalence, des mélodies accrocheuses aux grooves inimitables des morceaux comme “Bad Is Bad” et “Heart and Soul”. Même dans leur interprétation du “Honky Tonk Blues” de Hank Williams, ils ont fait preuve d’humour et de respect pour les originaux. In early ’83, Huey Lewis and the News were just another Californian band, with Huey himself having had a taste of fame with Clover in the ’70s and even contributing harmonica to Thin Lizzy’s “Live and Dangerous.” Yet, they were no ordinary group.
