In “Lives in the Balance”, Jackson Browne, known for his talent in writing moving melodies and lyrics that speak to the heart, appears to have focused most of his efforts on his criticism of Reagan. This leaves little room for his music, which seems like an afterthought. He even turns to reggae in one song (“Till I Go Down”) to compensate for the lack of instrumental accompaniment to his lyrics. The only exception to this is the single “In the Shape of a Heart”, where Browne’s signature style shines through. The song tells the story of his relationship with his late first wife, who passed away in 1976.
