Jimmy Witherspoon was not only a skilled blues vocalist, but also possessed musicality, taste, and a jazz feel that allowed him to perform convincingly in more sophisticated settings. Reprise Records released Hey, Mrs. Jones! as a follow-up, featuring Witherspoon’s powerful, energetic, and exuberant voice backed by H.B. Barnum’s fresh, nimble arrangements. The album’s diverse program includes string and rhythm sections on some tracks, while others feature a brassy big band, with standout solos from tenor saxophonists Harold Land and Ben Webster. These albums collectively demonstrate the breadth and depth of one of the greatest blues singers of all time.
