In the 1980s, John Mellencamp experiences increasing success, releasing a series of artistically remarkable and commercially profitable albums. Following the brilliant “The Lonesome Jubilee,” Mellencamp records his tenth studio album, “Big Daddy,” released on May 9, 1989. This album marks a slight change, with Mellencamp taking on production duties himself for the first time since “American Fool” in 1982, moving away from producer Don Gehman. “Big Daddy” is supported by four singles, including “Pop Singer,” which openly criticizes the music industry, and “Jackie Brown,” a stripped-down folk ballad.
