At the age of 16, Johnny Clegg, who later became a musician and anthropologist, encountered Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu migrant worker who had come to Johannesburg in search of employment. Clegg had already developed a deep interest in umbaqanga and kwela music, which were integral components of South African street music, as well as Zulu traditional dance. Together, they established Juluka, a mixed-race band, which was a daring and risky move considering the political climate of South Africa at the time. Despite the challenges of securing performance venues and airplay for their music on radio stations, they gained significant popularity, and by the release of their fourth album, Scatterlings, they had garnered sufficient international attention to embark on a tour of Europe and North America.
