During the late 1970s, many classic rock musicians were gravitating towards simplistic and accessible music, but Kansas remained steadfast in their commitment to pure prog rock. While the band explored other genres, their most successful album, Point of Know Return, leaned heavily in this direction. Despite going against the grain, the band managed to create some of their most beloved and enduring radio-friendly hits on this album. Point of Know Return marked the pinnacle of Kansas’ popularity, climbing to #4 on the album charts and sparking the band’s first major headlining tour. The album’s cover art, depicting a ship teetering on the edge of a waterfall, would become the band’s iconic image, replacing the abolitionist John Brown featured on the cover of their debut album in 1974.
