As a singer (often working as a lyricist as well) and actor, Sawada rose to fame in Japanese popular culture during the last three decades of the Shōwa era. In the late 1960s, he found success as the lead singer of the group The Tigers. After the Tigers disbanded and another project PYG ended, he began a solo career. As a solo artist, he has sold over twelve million singles and became the biggest male star in Japan in the 1970s and 1980s. While his amazing popularity declined rapidly in the 1980s, he continued to work as a successful artist. To date, he has sold over fifteen million records and is the 36th best-selling pop artist in Japan. He is one of the few Japanese singers who have sung in French.
