Kenny Millions, a second-generation Ukrainian-American saxophonist, was born Kenneth Keshavan Maslak on February 26, 1947, in Detroit, MI. Growing up in an ethnic neighborhood near the inner city, he was influenced by his Ukrainian grandfather’s Slavic folk music and inspired by jazz and rhythm & blues musicians like Yusef Lateef and Junior Walker in Detroit. These diverse elements shaped his unique style. Kenny studied at Cass Tech High School, renowned for producing top modern players heading to New York City. Later, he attended North Texas State University, where he formed his own band and toured with Motown artists in the South. His encounter with Rahsaan Roland Kirk allowed him to sit in with the legendary multi-instrumentalist, a rare and impactful opportunity.
