“Moondawn” is among Klaus Schulze’s top albums, along with “X” and “Mirage.” Following “Timewind,” Schulze was known for his cosmic, meditative synth music. The album starts with “Floating,” featuring spacey synth tones and a religious recitation, then shifts to captivating synth melodies with repetitive drums (by Harald Grosskopf) and ends with detached piano. “Mindphaser” begins with thunderous noises and celestial synth voices, transitioning into a cosmic arrangement with various synth and organ sounds and a monotonous drumbeat. “Moondawn” exemplifies Schulze’s skill in crafting an improvised synth universe and is a great lead-up to his mesmerizing “Mirage” album recorded a year later.
