Composer, arranger, and Exotica legend Les Baxter (1922-1996) released The Soul Of The Drums in 1963 on Reprise Records, which was later licensed to various other labels. This relentlessly tropical album features 12 tracks, including two renditions, and combines the Latin styles of Cha Cha Cha and Samba with symphonic Space-Age strings, big band brass bursts, and impressive drumming. The album can be seen as a culmination of Baxter’s drum-focused Skins! (1957) and his more melodious works like Jewels Of The Sea (1961) and others.
