Format : LP

Style : Gypsy Jazz

“The Gypsy Train” is the other album by the renowned duo consisting of Maurice Ferret and Joseph Pouville, the pillars of the famous “Clairon des Chasseurs de Montmartre” (unfortunately, there are only two albums in existence). In contrast to their highly swinging “Tribute to Django,” you won’t find any covers of the famous Gypsy guitarist here. There’s no swing or jazz either. Instead, you’ll be treated to various delightful tunes reminiscent of “Jeux Interdits,” “La Bamba,” or “Le Marchand de cacahouètes,” along with a few rumbas in vogue at the time: “Entre dos aguas,” “Gipsy rumba,” “El royo,” and even some overly familiar waltzes like “La Foule” or “La Partida.” In short, a repertoire crafted by seasoned musicians meant to captivate tourists seeking Parisian whimsy, hummable melodies, and a friendly, popular ambiance (while also aiming to fill the hat a bit!). By blending one side of “Tribute to Django” with one side of “The Gypsy Train,” you’ll likely get a fairly representative idea of the style and repertoire that our two comrades played for a considerable time at the legendary “Clairon des Chasseurs.” Rare record.
