Format : LP

Style : Smooth Jazz, Jazz-Funk

Once again, Michael Franks shifts his focus, this time towards a more sentimental and contemplative approach, resulting in Objects of Desire, a natural successor to Tiger in the Rain. Steve Khan’s guitar work and Rob Mounsey’s keyboard contributions add a unique touch, without detracting from the orchestral magnificence of certain tracks. Franks, primarily serving as the album’s producer, offers his most personal musical statement to date. In his quest to create a musical portrait in the style of Paul Gauguin’s art, Franks comes closest with “Tahitian Moon.” While his charming love song style is evident in “Laughing Gas,” his attempts to create something ambitious within the jazz-pop genre do not reach the wide appeal of his previous works. Throughout the album, however, Franks showcases his diverse artistic influences and his ongoing ability to experiment with excellent results.
