Miles Davis’ consistent presence during the preceding decade was essentially a cleverly maintained illusion. Since “Get Up with It,” recorded in 1974, most of the trumpeter’s subsequent albums consisted of enthusiastic double live performances or anthological collections. In reality, Miles had withdrawn from the music scene since 1976 due to serious health reasons. Therefore, when this new Miles album finally appeared in July 1981, it was a true resurrection rather than a calculated return of an artist who had taken a step back to reevaluate his work. While he might not be in his best form, Miles still proves to be alert, capturing the essence of the new decade in his music. This album features a mix of the good and the less impressive, showcasing his enduring creativity despite physical limitations.
