OM, a quartet based in Lucerne, skillfully blended rock and free improv to perfection. The group consists of guitarist Christy Doran, along with fellow countrymen Urs Leimgruber on reeds, Bobby Burri on bass, and Fredy Studer on drums. Their debut album for the JAPO label showcases Doran’s compositional talent. While all four albums are part of ECM’s 2006 retrospective, this release is an excellent introduction to OM’s distinct nocturnal sound. Leimgruber’s melodic prowess shines on tracks like “Holly,” featuring his oboe-like soprano and Doran’s industrial touches. “Hommage à Mme. Stirnmaa” stands out with a powerful tenor solo, an intense percussion showcase by Studer, and a captivating underwater raga, making it a true masterpiece. Exploring OM’s complete discography is a must for anyone seeking extraordinary musical experiences.
