In 1983, Paul Simon released his fifth solo album titled “Hearts and Bones,” a collection of songs that emerged after Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Concert in Central Park” (1981). Initially conceived as a joint project with Garfunkel, it evolved into a solely Simon-led endeavor when Garfunkel departed midway. Serving as a crucial link between Simon’s earlier pop-folk-jazzy American songwriting and the more rhythmic, conversationally styled South African/world music of his subsequent album “Graceland” (1986), “Hearts and Bones” holds significance in Simon’s musical journey. Co-produced by Simon, Russ Titelman, Roy Halee, and Lenny Waronker, the album boasts a polished, almost sterile quality due to its digital production, using now-defunct technology like The Synclavier sampler. Its lyrical depth and personal nature explore themes like Simon’s relationship with actress Carrie Fisher, his musings on religion and spirituality, and his experimentation with musical elements such as the “Devil’s interval” in the opening track “Allergies.” Notably, “Hearts and Bones” showcases Simon’s distinctive metaphoric style and his exploration of various themes, making it a notable addition to his illustrious discography.
