Pumpuang Duangjan, born into a poor peasant family, had limited education (primary level). Despite leaving school unable to read or write, she possessed an extraordinary voice. At the age of 14 in 1975, she went to Bangkok with hopes of becoming a singer. Initially learning to dance, her remarkable singing talents were quickly noticed. Alongside other popular stars of the genre such as Sayan Sanya, Suraphol Sombatcharoen, Chai Muengsingh, Chaiya Mitchai, Monkhaen Kaenkoon, Tai Orathai, Jintara Poonlarp, and Kratae R-Siam, she gained fame by touring temple fairs in the province of Suphanburi, the birthplace of this music. Through her songs, she humorously and cynically addressed the hardships and scorn faced by rural migrants working in the city (Bangkok), as well as the nostalgia for her homeland and friends she no longer saw. She quickly became known as the “queen of luk thung.”
