In 1984, Ray Charles released “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind,” his second album for Columbia Records, following his return to the vinyl world with “Wish You Were Here Tonight” in 1983. While his deal with Columbia aimed to target the country music market, this album, despite incorporating some country elements like pedal steel and fiddles, remains a smooth, soulful pop-rock collection. The country influence comes more from Ray’s persona and lyrical themes, but in the end, it defies classification, firmly residing in the unique genre of Ray Charles. The album showcases Ray’s versatility, effortlessly transitioning between different styles, from the smooth and slinky to more humorous and politically incorrect tracks, all underpinned by the musicians’ panache and Ray’s heartfelt delivery.
