Robert Palmer showcases his versatility on his album “Don’t Explain,” delving into various genres, including Billie Holiday-style, show tunes, and cabaret jazz, even experimenting with vocal overdubs resembling Ladysmith Black Mambazo. However, the album’s diverse styles often feel disjointed, as Palmer’s voice doesn’t seamlessly fit each one. Despite offering some covers of Marvin Gaye and Dylan and plenty of rock tracks, the album’s rockers lack hooks and feel cluttered with excessive guitar and horn elements, ultimately falling short of expectations. Palmer’s attempt to establish himself as a class act beyond his fashion sense isn’t entirely convincing.
