In the late 1960s, Sérgio Mendes was the best-selling Brazilian artist in the US. Look Around, his third album with Brasil ’66, was released in 1968 and features Lani Hall, João Palma, John Pisano, José Soares, and Janis Hansen. The album includes “The Look of Love,” performed at the 1968 Academy Awards, and “With a Little Help From My Friends” from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper LP. Look Around reached second place on the Jazz Album Chart in 1968 and remains popular today. The album showcases a variety of Brazilian music, including songs from Gilberto Gil, Joao Donato, and Dori Caymmi. The record also includes haunting tracks from Mendes himself, such as “So Many Stars” and the title track.
