Sheila E’s self-titled third album marked a departure from her previous works, as Prince only wrote half of the songs. Recorded between December 1985 and September 1986, the album featured three singles, including the successful “Hold Me,” written by Sheila E herself. Prince played most of the instruments on the album, and Sheila E introduced several band members to him, some of whom later joined his touring bands. During this time, Sheila E was a drummer in Prince’s backing band for the Sign O’ The Times Tour. This album also served as the inspiration for The Black Album, which Prince intended to release shortly after Sign O’ The Times but replaced with Lovesexy in 1988.
