Despite limited commercial success, the octet made a significant impact on the city’s music scene for three years, recording for Atlantic and other labels. In 1962, Slide had the chance to record an album for Columbia’s Epic label, resulting in “Drum Suite,” featuring guest artists like Freddie Hubbard and Max Roach. Often overlooked, this album showcases Slide’s exceptional writing, tailored for specific talents like Yusef Lateef and Roach. We’ve revived this gem from Hampton’s overlooked octet catalog, remixing it and adding two additional tracks, highlighting Slide’s prowess as both a composer and arranger.
