This double-LP collection offers an outstanding reissue of Sonny Stitt’s early and pivotal recordings. Stitt primarily showcases his tenor saxophone skills, with occasional appearances on baritone and alto saxophones, notably in his rendition of “Cherokee.” He collaborates with six different trios, including numerous tracks featuring pianist Bud Powell, as well as a quintet featuring trombonist J.J. Johnson and a septet featuring Gene Ammons on baritone sax. These timeless bop performances are particularly notable for Stitt, who, despite being labeled a Charlie Parker imitator on alto saxophone, establishes his unique voice on the tenor. Most of this significant music has been subsequently reissued, making this double-LP set a cherished relic of Stitt’s pivotal career moment.
