With “Rockin’ All Over The World” (1977) and “If You Can’t Stand The Heat…” (1978), Status Quo handed production to Pip Williams, resulting in a poppier, commercial sound that displeased fans and impacted sales. When they returned to Williams for “Whatever You Want,” fans were wary, but the album defied expectations. The title track’s opening chords marked a miraculous turnaround, with guitars reclaiming power and Rossi/Parfitt delivering a colossal rock hit. The album continued strong, reasserting Quo’s signature boogie-hard-rock style. Though not revolutionary, surprises like the pop-infused ‘Living On An Island’ and the seamless ‘Come Rock With Me’/’Rockin’ On’ duo added freshness. Despite minor dips, “Whatever You Want” rekindled Status Quo’s career, solidifying its place in rock history.
