La transition de Steel Pulse du label Mango d’Island à Elektra, marquée par l’impressionnant True Democracy, leur album le plus puissant selon certains. Cependant, l’album suivant, Earth Crisis, a déçu, mettant en évidence la lutte du groupe entre proposer du reggae roots de manière confrontante/prophétique ou du reggae pop lisse dans le style lovers rock. Babylon the Bandit, sorti deux ans plus tard, a été accueilli avec prudence par les fans, car de nombreux problèmes d’Earth Crisis persistaient, tels que les transitions abruptes entre déclarations politico-religieuses et reggae pop sucré. Pourtant, des titres marquants comme “Sugar Daddy” et “Not King James Version” ressortent, tandis que “Don’t Be Afraid” du claviériste Selwyn Brown reste un point fort.

Steel Pulse’s transition from Island’s Mango label to Elektra marked by the impressive True Democracy, arguably their most powerful album. However, the subsequent Earth Crisis disappointed, showcasing the band’s struggle between delivering roots reggae in a confrontational/prophetic manner or slick pop reggae in the lovers rock style. Babylon the Bandit, released two years later, was met with caution by fans, as many issues from Earth Crisis persisted, such as the jarring transitions between politico-religious statements and candy-coated pop reggae. Yet, standout tracks like “Sugar Daddy” and “Not King James Version” shine through, while keyboardist Selwyn Brown’s “Don’t Be Afraid” remains a highlight.
