La carrière de Steel Pulse débute en 1978 avec “Handsworth Revolution”, suivi l’année suivante par “Tribute to the Martyrs”, deux albums propulsant ces natifs de Birmingham au premier plan du reggae anglais, distribués par Island Records. Leur troisième album, “Caught You”, sorti sur le même label, a tenté de conquérir l’Amérique en adoptant les esthétiques émergentes des années 1980, mais a échoué sur tous les fronts, conduisant à la fin de leur collaboration avec Island Records. Cependant, en 1982, avec “True Democracy”, Steel Pulse revient à la qualité mélodique qui les caractérise, offrant leur album le plus abouti à ce jour, marqué par un son et une production soignés qui rappellent l’essence du groupe. C’est une collection de morceaux superbes qui conclut la trilogie historique du groupe avant que les pads de batterie électronique ne dominent leurs productions futures.

However, in 1982, with “True Democracy,” Steel Pulse returns to the melodic quality they’re known for, delivering their most refined album yet, marked by polished sound and production that harks back to the essence of the group.
