The same Steeleye Span lineup responsible for their acclaimed “Below the Salt” album returned for an even more daring and robust follow-up. While this release keeps filler to a minimum, some of the weaker moments occur when the band strays from their amplified and rearranged approach, as seen in “The Ups and Downs” and the brief “Robbery with Violins.” However, standout tracks like “Allison Gross,” a heavy, percussion-free narrative of a man pursued by a witch, and the quasi-title track, “Parcel of Rogues,” a stirring a cappella piece with progressive elements, make Side 2 a continuous Spanfest. The album, although not highly progressive, offers an engaging blend of Celtic rock and hard rock attitude, standing as a significant work in their discography.
