Dan Aykroyd was left astonished, originally conceiving the Blues Brothers as a mere Saturday Night Live skit with John Belushi, both being comedians. However, their sunglasses-clad persona morphed unexpectedly into a substantial venture. Aykroyd confessed, “We were just two kids thrilled to play the music we loved with some of the best musicians.” Despite initial modest intentions, the concept grew into a record and a tour. With backing from accomplished musicians like Steve Cropper and Donald “Duck” Dunn, the Blues Brothers’ Original Soundtrack Recording, released on June 20, 1980, featured iconic guest appearances by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, and James Brown. Beyond entertainment, their efforts revitalized R&B and blues amid a musical lull, bridging disco’s decline and the emergence of punk and new wave.
