Encore dans la Californie de la fin des années 70, le projet GUN CLUB prend forme autour de Jeffrey Lee Pierce, passionné de BLONDIE et fervent défenseur du punk rock émergent, du “cowpunk” des voisins X, de l’alchimie mélodique des TELEVISION, ainsi que de l’héritage psychédélique noir local. Avant de créer ce groupe singulier, Pierce écrit pour le célèbre “Slash magazine” et passe de la théorie à la pratique en s’entourant d’individus partageant sa vision esthétique. Avec Kid Congo, fan des CRAMPS, ils forment THE CREEPING RITUAL avant d’opter pour le nom plus agressif de GUN CLUB sur les conseils de Keith Morris. Leur premier album, sorti sur le label indépendant “Slash”, mêle l’énergie anarchique du punk et la noirceur originelle du blues, établissant ainsi leur réputation sombre dans la scène underground de Los Angeles. L’album présente un mélange éclectique de styles, du blues roots au punk, et laisse une empreinte durable en introduisant le concept de “punk blues”.

In late 1970s California, the GUN CLUB project takes shape around Jeffrey Lee Pierce, a BLONDIE enthusiast and ardent advocate of emerging punk rock, the “cowpunk” sound of neighbors X, the melodic alchemy of TELEVISION, and the local black psychedelic heritage. Before forming this distinctive group, Pierce writes for the renowned “Slash magazine” and transitions from theory to practice by surrounding himself with individuals who share his aesthetic vision. With Kid Congo, a CRAMPS fan, they establish THE CREEPING RITUAL before adopting the more aggressive name GUN CLUB on the advice of Keith Morris. Their debut album, released on the independent label “Slash,” blends the anarchic energy of punk with the primal darkness of blues, solidifying their dark reputation in the Los Angeles underground scene. The album showcases an eclectic mix of styles, from roots blues to punk, and leaves a lasting mark by introducing the concept of “punk blues.”
