John Coltrane’s initial release on the Impulse label took an unconventional turn as the renowned tenor saxophonist and his quartet collaborated with a medium-sized supporting ensemble, performing Eric Dolphy’s arrangements of “Africa,” “Greensleeves,” and “Blues Minor.” Notably, “Africa” stands out, although Coltrane didn’t explore this direction further in his future recordings, making this album a unique departure in his discography.
