Ornette Coleman’s “Free Jazz” was a groundbreaking masterpiece that introduced the concept of “new music.” Its controversial nature was evident when Downbeat magazine had to review the album twice, with one critic awarding it a 5-star rating and another giving it none. Martin Williams, in the album’s liner notes, notes that jazz musicians had attempted spontaneous group improvisation without preconceptions in the past, often falling back on playing the blues in a familiar key. However, it’s a testament to the significance of this music that all these young musicians, each with varying levels of experience in jazz, could contribute spontaneously and sustain a performance like the one presented on this record.
