In 1981, pianist Hal Galper made his debut with the Phil Woods Quartet, stepping in for the departed Mike Melillo. The quartet, a regular working ensemble, featured altoist and leader Phil Woods, along with bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. The album showcases Woods’ prowess on two of his robust compositions (“Petite Chanson” and “Goodbye Mr. Evans”), along with four standards, notably “Star Eyes” and “Nica’s Dream.” In the realm of modern bebop, Phil Woods stands among the top players of the post-1970 era, consistently delivering dynamic and inventive solos throughout this recording.
