The debate surrounding whether The Rolling Stones’ “Their Satanic Majesties Request” was intended as a parody of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” or a genuine emulation of it has persisted since the album’s 1967 release. Despite similarities in album artwork due to shared photographer Michael Cooper, The Stones’ 50th Anniversary reissue of “Satanic Majesties” pales in comparison to The Beatles’ lavish “Sgt. Pepper’s” reissue. Keith Richards’ claim of a put-on aside, the album’s origins were influenced by various personal, professional, and cultural factors, resulting in a unique and unconventional addition to The Stones’ discography. It combines British psychedelia with American rock, featuring energetic and groove-driven music, even in its less structured moments. While not characteristic of The Stones’ usual sound, the album captures the spirit of 1967’s psychedelic ideals, offering a distinct and incomparable sonic experience, setting it apart from other albums of the era, including “Sgt. Pepper’s.”
