In 1972, The Temptations released their latest album under Motown called ‘Solid Rock’. The album marked the departure of Eddie Kendricks and the retirement of Paul Williams due to illness. They were replaced by Damon Harris, a falsetto specialist, and Richard Street. Despite still featuring socially-conscious tracks such as ‘Stop The War Now’ and ‘What It Is’, the overall mood of the album was less intense than previous ones. Notable songs on the album include the lively ‘Smooth Sailing (From Now On)’, ‘Take A Look Around’, and the soulful ballad ‘It’s Summer’ led by Dennis Edwards, which echoed the style of ‘Just My Imagination’. The most successful single from the album was ‘Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)’, a funk-infused track that served as a sharp response to former Temptations members, Ruffin and Kendricks, who had allegedly criticized the group after leaving.
