Coincés à Londres sans passeports ni argent, ils sollicitent Chris Blackwell d’Island Records pour le projet Catch A Fire, considéré comme le premier album de reggae international. Malgré les difficultés financières et la mauvaise réputation du groupe, l’avance de 8000 Livres de Blackwell permet d’enregistrer en Jamaïque avec des musiciens de renom. Sorti en 1972, l’album dénonce l’oppression et marque une évolution historique pour le reggae. La version Deluxe de 2001, incluant des morceaux inédits, révèle l’impact musical durable de cet opus.

In December 1971, after a decade-long career in Jamaica, the Wailers (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer) believed their years of struggle were behind them. Touring with Johnny Nash and supported by CBS, they hoped in vain for success. Stranded in London without passports or money, they approached Chris Blackwell of Island Records for the Catch A Fire project, considered the first international reggae album. Despite financial difficulties and the group’s poor reputation, Blackwell’s £8000 advance enabled recording in Jamaica with renowned musicians. Released in 1972, the album denounces oppression and marks a historical evolution for reggae. The 2001 Deluxe version, including unreleased tracks, reveals the lasting musical impact of this work.
