“Tiens ! Les bougeons éclatent…”, est un parfait exemple de la sonorité du groupe lors de sa sortie en 1978, environ un an après l’enregistrement en studio. Le pianiste Patrick Vollat avait quitté le groupe mais restait étroitement lié à l’ARFI (notamment en tant que membre de l’excellent Marmite Infernale). Ainsi, le Workshop de Lyon s’était stabilisé en un quatuor composé de Louis Sclavis, Maurice Merle, Jean Bolcato et Christian Rollet, et possédait déjà à l’époque un répertoire sans égal. Celui-ci n’a jamais cessé de s’élargir à travers les rencontres et les changements de personnel, tout en préservant sa générosité et en ne montrant aucun signe de vieillissement. Cela confère au Workshop de Lyon une certaine dignité universelle, honorant leurs modèles originaux tels qu’Albert Ayler ou l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, les transfigurant en une nouvelle approche esthétique passionnante pleine d’ouvertures et d’échanges.
