Bob Marley’s Exodus, the inaugural studio album recorded by Marley & the Wailers outside of Jamaica, originated from a period of involuntary exile following a violent attack on Marley and his wife Rita in Kingston. Seeking refuge in London, Marley refined the songs for Exodus, representing a shift in his sound and themes. Divided into two distinct halves, the album’s A-side delves into political and Rastafarian themes, while the B-side explores themes of love and celebration. Recorded with a renowned group of musicians, including the Barrett brothers, Exodus was meticulously crafted from January to May 1977, resulting in alternative versions cherished by collectors. From the atmospheric opener “Natural Mystic” to the monumental “Exodus,” Marley’s Exodus showcases his lyrical prowess and musical innovation. Despite his creative peak during his London exile, Marley’s prolific songwriting led to the release of the companion album Kaya less than a year later. As the album hit the shelves, Marley embarked on a triumphant world tour, although a football injury sustained during a match in Paris in May 1977 would ultimately reveal a malignant melanoma, leading to his untimely death on May 11, 1981.
