Kudsi Erguner and Xavier Bellenger offer a cross-continental gift, the memory of their encounter – at the intersection of three worlds: “The Turkish-Persian heritage and the Native American universe came together, right here in Europe, in the architecture of the religious West in the 12th century,” said Kudsi Erguner. He recalls, “We were in the Abbey of Senanque, it was four in the morning, and it was quite cold. It was November 1982, and I had just accompanied my fellow countrymen, the whirling dervishes, for hours to record an album. Xavier Bellenger continues, “As for me, I was there as the sound engineer. After listening so intently to their Sufi, ceremonial, and mystical music, along with Erguner’s ney improvisations, I felt compelled to take out my kena and play a scale. Just like that, to see how closely related the tonalities of the two instruments are.”
