The monks of Keur Moussa have crafted a liturgy that draws from both the traditional currents of black and white Africa and the Gregorian heritage. The latter was deeply absorbed by the initial founders during their time at the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. Among their adaptations, it’s worth noting the innovation of the keyed kora, developed from the traditional kora, an African harp (a type of harp-lute). They have preserved the instrument’s rich musical quality without altering its essence. Through a clever system of keys, they are now able to control the tuning of the kora’s 21 strings, which previously experienced fluctuations that tested the patience of many musicians.
